Michael Kitchen doesn’t often play meek, but in The Trial (1993), he’s completely convincing as the pathetic, groveling, empty shell of a man, Block, who’s been awaiting trial for five years with no end to his ordeal in sight. No wonder he goes berserk upon hearing that he may lose his lawyer.
