Praise for Michael Kitchen as Richard Crane from Paul Abbott, Beth Johnson’s academic study on the screenwriter’s work:

Michael Kitchen – an established and serious English actor – plays out his part as Anna’s unfaithful husband in a gorgeous yet simultaneously revolting childish manner. Characterized as a successful wealthy brat of a man, Richard, Kitchen’s character, is not, however, without warmth, and in particular his cutting, dry irony, his clear intelligence and his adolescent reaction to Anna’s affair are gripping. Indeed, it is Richard/Michael who often has the best lines in the drama and delivers them with superb comic timing.
