Sad to learn of the passing of Peter O’Toole.

There’s something about a nasty character drinking tea from a dainty china cup that makes him all the more sinister.  Evil masked by refinement often makes for the most terrifying villains.

To show just how cold-blooded he is, Major Diessen calmly sips his tea prior to ordering a suspected spy executed by firing squad right behind him. Then, without skipping a beat, he wipes his mouth as the bloody corpse is removed.

Michael Kitchen is supposed to be a scary Nazi in Pied Piper, but for some inexplicable reason, watching him in this role made me snicker. Maybe it’s because I saw these adorable photos from the set first before seeing the movie or maybe it’s because Major Diessen seems to be trying too hard to act menacing in his early scenes.  If he had a mustache, he’d probably be twirling it!

Two great actors face off.  Needless to say, Peter O’Toole is excellent as the lead in this film.

Outfitted in attire similar to that of Karl Strasser at his most evil in FW: Sunflower, the baddie here from the remake of the Nevil Shute novel, Pied Piper, is none other than Michael Kitchen in another take on the stereotypical terrifying SS officer.  While Strasser is an altogether unsympathetic war criminal, though, the character of Major Diessen has a small spot of tenderness.  Plus, I must say, MK looks quite dashing in uniform, Nazi though it may be.

These b/w stills are from the set of Pied Piper (1989)/Crossing to Freedom (1990), in which Michael Kitchen plays Major Diessen, a nasty officer of the Reich who’s nothing like the sweetly smiling actor in these photos.  I didn’t realize that Michael Kitchen has played a Nazi so many times in his career!

The Bunker: Michael Kitchen: playing with kids

Michael Kitchen has spent much of his career playing villains, so it’s no surprise that he’s played a few Nazis.  In The Bunker (1981) Sgt. Rochus Misch is a loyal devotee and servant of Hitler, yet he doesn’t seem half as bad as some of the nasty characters MK would later bring to life.

(MK’s Nazis seem to have a soft spot for kids.)
